`GATEWAY TO GREATNESS`
Greater Grace International School is an English-speaking, international, private Preparatory -12 School presently represented by thirty nationalities and ten religions.

“A wonderful model of harmony which provides the opportunity to maximize the emotional intelligence of students by learning to appreciate others from differing cultural backgrounds.”
commendation by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI)
History and Background [Page Top]

The school was founded in 1991, for the purpose of educating the children of international missionaries in Hungary . It was not long before the international community in Budapest discovered the school, and by the end of 1992, GGIS has enrolled forty-five students. At this point only a few classrooms were rented in a Hungarian school. The following year saw a breakthrough in the growth of the school: the signing of a long-term rental contract for our current location and the decree from the Ministry of Education officially recognizing Greater Grace International School. The size of the property made it possible for enrollment to double the following year. The initial idea of educating missionary children quickly grew into a successful enterprise; we were soon able to extend our services to diplomats, businessmen and other expatriates. We enjoy a growing enrollment and welcome the opportunity to prepare students to become mature individuals, equipped for success with knowledge, self-respect and regard for others.
GGIS offers the following: [Page Top]
- The highest standard of academics;
- A caring, loving, and fun atmosphere;
- Highly-qualified native speakers;
- Small class sizes for a personal and focused learning environment;
- Intensive EAL (English as an Additional Language);
- Latin and Logic;
- A convenient and safe location in Buda.
- Above all, we offer the time-honored tradition of:
- Morality (conformity to the rules of right conduct);

- Respect (esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person).
High Academic Standards & Quality Education [Page Top]
GGIS' high standard of excellence in academics, discipline and morality create a soaring atmosphere for learning. In this unique learning environment, students not only gain knowledge, but also obtain a global awareness. Most of the students excel beyond their goals. They are tested regularly using standard American tests, such as the Stanford Test, OLSAT, PSAT and SAT to assure that their achievement levels meet university standards. Our careful selection of teachers and our promotion of the highest possible academic standards over the years have resulted in SAT scores, averaging 10% higher than the U.S. national average and excelling among the international schools of Budapest as well. Our 95% rate of admittance to the finest universities and colleges in the world speaks for itself. In addition, GGIS is an actively participating member of the Association of Christian Schools International, a professional organization that helps improve the quality of Christian schools and encourages standards of excellence. When students leave GGIS, they are prepared for the academic challenges of higher education and beyond.
GGIS is a full-scale American primary and secondary school approved by Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), featuring American curricula, the SAXON math program and other supplemental materials. Class levels begin with an English preparatory program for preschoolers and kindergartners and continue through the primary grades (1-6), middle school (7-8), and high school (9-12). Diplomas are awarded in accordance with standard American practices.
Our curriculum is a comprehensive treatment of all core subjects, including English (Phonics; American, British and World Literature; Grammar; Poetry; Vocabulary and Spelling; Creative Writing), History and Social Studies (World History, Philosophy, Economics, American Government, Cultural Anthropology), and Science (Biology; Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics, AP Physics). SAXON Mathematics (Algebra, Business Math, Geometry, Trigonometry, AP Calculus, Consumer Math) is a fully- integrated math curriculum. It places emphasis on concept learning through repetition and multi-thematic learning. The students learn short, easy concepts and study multiple concepts simultaneously.
Our program works exceptionally well in an international setting because it encourages learning by “doing”. Other non-core subjects include: Bible, Languages (French, German, Hungarian, and Latin), Computer Sciences, Art History, Physical Education, Music, Hungarian Culture and College Preparatory classes. The curriculum for these courses is generally created by each class instructor and is approved by the principal .
Teachers and Students [Page Top]
The multinational environment of students and staff creates a unique atmosphere at GGIS. The teachers are selected through a complex interviewing process where their qualifications, experience and personal character are evaluated. The majority of the staff is native English speakers. The faculty recognizes the multi-national, multi-cultured make-up of the student body. They are aware that each child is unique with different capacities, strengths and weaknesses, and they work toward the goal of their reaching their full potential. They maintain an environment that fosters an attitude of both inquiry and discipline. The adult-like treatment of the students encourages self- expression and promotes a confident, healthy self-image. The strong moral conviction of our staff serves as positive role-model for the students. This nurturing community develops the students potential and capacities, provides stability for third culture children, and creates an environment that emphasizes positive peer pressure.
Pre-School and preparatory one [Page Top]
Because a large percentage of a child's personality is formed before they reach age seven, early childhood education is crucial to children's development. Our emphasis is on both socialization and pre-academic skills in a nurturing, home-like environment. Children learn concentration, interest, and a love of learning through cooking, dress-up, singing, art projects, story time, and other activities. Their normal desire for independence and a positive sense of self-esteem is encouraged. They learn how to observe, question, and explore ideas independently, and are helped to develop the kindness, courtesy, and self-discipline that will allow them to become a contributing member in a diverse society.
EAL—English as an Additional Language Program [Page Top]
Does your child speak very little or no English? How will he catch up with the rest of his classmates who have already learned English or are native speakers? This is not a problem at GGIS. The GGIS English as an Additional Language Program has been developed with the goal of advancing students into mainstream classes within a one year period. Through the introduction of a carefully designed speech program aimed at developing articulation, we are able to advance children into a more focused system of study, utilizing curricula familiar to GGIS's regular classes. It is our desire to build a sure foundation of the English language while developing a sense of accomplishment in each individual. Children can succeed beyond their expectations. Thanks to our strict “English Only” (or Total Immersion) Policy” and our effective EAL program parents are surprised at how fast their children develop their English skills.
The study of Latin offers a unique opportunity to study the nature of language itself. A conscious study of Latin grammatical principles and its accompanying traditional terminology (at appropriate maturity levels) benefits students in their speaking and writing of English and in any further language study they may undertake.
The study of Latin can result in the broadening and deepening of students' English vocabulary and can impart an understanding of word formation, a most useful tool in approaching unfamiliar words. Latin is an excellent basis for the study of many modern languages, especially the Romance languages. Our students also report interest in things they had not previously considered until they studied Latin.
On an elementary level, Latin is very helpful in improving English reading. Because Latin is a phonetic language, studying and reading it aloud often produces the basic understanding of phonetic principles students may never have mastered when first learning to read English.
What do students get out of studying Latin?
- Larger English vocabularies
- Higher verbal SAT scores
- Higher English ACT scores
- Acceptance into good colleges and universities
- Sensitivity to language
- Sensitivity to people and cultures
- A sense of history.
Does Latin help SAT scores? The answer once again is a definitive YES! The scores of students who took the SAT II in various languages are listed below so that one might see a correlation between language studied and verbal scores.

Principles We Hold Dear [Page Top]
Though our world is rapidly changing, there are certain timeless values that are absolutely essential to the proper character development of a child or young adult. Our motto - morality, discipline, and respect — is what we endeavor to instill in our students. We believe that our children should become not only well-educated but also honorable, virtuous and successful adults as well. The school places a great emphasis on educating students in this spirit with the help of caring, attentive, and loving experts in partnership with parents. It is the personal conviction of all of our teachers and administrators that children are our most valuable treasure and that they do not exist for education, but that education exists for them. To teach them what to think is important, but to teach them how to think is even more important. The happiness of a child greatly affects the happiness of the family. We at GGIS want to make sure that the entire family benefits from their child attending GGIS.

We are very familiar with this cultural phenomenon. Imagine the following scenario: You have just moved to Hungary with your family. Your child should go to school, but since you are an expatriate, you would like him to participate in international education. English speaking schools seem to be the best solution, so you enroll him into one. There he is, aged six, ten or sixteen, far from his own culture, immersed into a foreign one, speaking a different language. Though naturally he could be a very capable child, he will experience difficulties due to his new environment.
We at GGIS train our teachers to handle third culture kids according to the unique needs and challenges they have. Our teachers let them know that EVERYTHING IS OK. With the proper attitude and expertise our teachers make sure that the transition or initial shock the child goes though becomes a smooth changeover. We deal with third culture kids every day, and we love the challenge. The result is truly rewarding. Seeing a child go from insecurity to the freedom of being himself is worth the effort. For more insight on the subject please read former Principal Joseph Cerquitella's article, Third Culture Kids in a Flat World .
